Dan Kiley was born in 1912 in Boston Massachusetts. He attended public school through 12th grade and then took up an apprenticeship with a Landscape Architect named Warren Manning. After four years with Manning, Kiley attended Harvard for Landscape Architecture but left after two years without graduating. He filled the next few years before the war with a job in Washington D.C., the start of an architecture office in New Hampshire, and the marriage to his wife.
A turning point in Dan Kiley's career came with the start of WWII and his involvement in the military. First serving as an infantryman Kiley quickly became promoted to chief designer. This roll gave him the task of designing the courtroom for the Nuremberg Trials. After the War Kiley toured Europe and became fascinated by the garden of Versailles and the work of Frenchmen Andre Le Notre. The geometric modernistic styles of LA that Kiley witnessed in Europe was the inspiration for his design work back in the states.
Kiley set up in office first in New Hampshire, and finally in Vermont. This office gave him numerous design opportunities where he was able to put his ideas and thoughts in gorgeous landscapes. Kiley’s work stretched across multiple disciplines from small residential builds to large scale park projects.
